To all Members of Hunstanton Croquet Club

Message from Chairman

I hope this finds you well, even if we are all missing our games of Croquet.

2020 Season

The Management Committee held a Special meeting at a social distance outside the clubhouse on Monday 17th August.  The purpose was to discuss and review, plans and decisions about Re-opening and the AGM.  We warmly welcomed Caroline Harper, Gary Lewis and Grenville Perry who have been co-opted on to the committee.  Grenville has also agreed to take on the position of Minute Secretary, but this still leaves the bulk of the Secretary’s duties with the Treasurer for the time being.

  • After lengthy discussion it was decided, in the interest of everyone’s safety, to remain closed for the rest of the 2020 season.
  • As we cannot hold an AGM, because of the restriction on numbers present, we have postponed the AGM until it is safe to hold a meeting of 40 or more people at a suitable venue.

2021 Season

We will have to set in place COVID-19 compliant arrangements to ensure everyone’s safety.  We will advise you of the measures we will all have to take.  These are likely to include:

  • Controlling numbers by booking lawns on-line, as we will not being able to hold “club afternoons” as these would exceed permitted numbers gathered.  So maybe you could think of playing in the mornings or evenings.
  • We will do everything we can to put procedures in place to help us all to keep each other safe, especially sanitising the equipment and all surfaces touched.

Secretary

The post of Secretary is key to the running of the club and remains vacant.  The club’s constitution has set the duties of the Secretary as follows: To arrange meetings, prepare agendas and keep minutes. In addition, the Secretary shall attend to correspondence (including entries to tournaments and competitions), maintain a register of Members and advise the Committee on any matters concerning procedures and rules.  Most of these duties are being performed by the Treasurer, but this situation cannot continue indefinitely.  If you have good communication skills, a familiarity with IT and an eye for detail; and think you might be able to take on this role or would like to know more, please contact either Chairman or Treasurer.

Conclusion

The Committee will keep these and any other ideas under review and will keep you all advised.

Best wishes

Janet Kendal

Chairman’s Message

Dear Members

I hope you are well and managing to stay clear of the Coronavirus.  I also trust that you are all coping with the current restrictions.  If anyone has problems we could help with, please contact me or any members of the committee.

It is with great sorrow that I have to inform you that for the health and safety of us all, the committee has decided that the club will remain closed for the whole of the 2020 season.  We will hope to re-open in 2021 for a full year’s events.  Until then stay safe.  Best wishes

Janet Kendal, Chairman, Hunstanton Croquet Club chairman@hunstantoncroquetclub.co.uk

President’s Message

Dear Members

I would like to extend my thanks to Janet and her team for conducting such a well considered survey on members wishes for this playing year. There was a clear decision by the committee in favour of cancelling all play for 2020 and as President, I fully support this. Much as we all miss our game, and the tremendous social side of playing, the virus is more important than this.

I am confident that we will emerge from this valuing the simple pleasures more and really appreciating our wonderful sport and all that goes with it.  In the meantime, I would urge you to consider donating your membership and tournament fees to help the Club through this difficult time.  Let me wish you, your families and loved ones my best wishes for staying safe and well.

Simon Carter, President, Hunstanton Croquet Club

Message from Treasurer – David Brame

It is with great sadness that we inform you that David Brame died on 23 July 2020.  David and Sarah joined Hunstanton Croquet Club in 2018 after attending the annual ‘Come & Try Day’ in May. In very short order David mastered the basics of GC and developed a trademark jump shot, which won him many a hoop, taking his opponents by surprise. David had a remarkable second year.  In 2019 he won numerous club competitions; and did an historic double in the GC August Open Invitation, winning both the singles and the doubles. He went on to win the National Grass Roots Final and finished joint leader at the National C-Level Final, losing out by the narrowest of margins on hoop difference. David was also a key player in the club’s squads and teams for the CA GC Inter-Club and GC Murphy Shield competitions; and in the EACF GC Open, B-Level & HC Leagues. He was also an active committee member and volunteer for working parties, etc. David was and will remain an inspiration for all of us. Our thoughts and sympathies are with Sarah and his family.

Message from Chairman – Roy Donner

It is with sadness that we have to inform you that Roy Donner passed away on 28th May.  He was a far country member so couldn’t attend many club afternoons, but played at his local club in Woodhall Spa.  Roy successfully entered our internal competitions and tournaments and was a member of our league team.  Roy and Pauline enjoyed our club social events and often stayed on for a meal before returning to Horncastle.  We will miss his happy smile and the twinkle in his eye.  Our thoughts and condolences go out to Pauline.

Message from Treasurer – Ron Coggins

It is with sadness that we have to inform you that Ron Coggins died on 13th June.  He was a keen member who took up croquet late in life.  He made many friends and will be sadly missed for his enthusiastic play, kind words and generous spirit.  Our thoughts and condolences are with his family.
